4In early Buddhist philosophy, desires for spiritual development and similar things are called chanda, often translated as “aspiration”. However, I’m not aware of any principled way of distinguishing between chanda and the “bad” desire (called tanh), so this seems to be just assuming an arbitrary exception to the general theory. In fact, in later Buddhist philosophy, even getting rid of the desire for spiritual development is considered important, in line with the discussion on letting go at the end of Chapter 15.
