Project work and seminar
The seminar part goes deeper into current research problems. All participants choose one research problem from the recent literature, carry out a small-scale research project on the topic, in groups of 1-4 students, and report on the topic and their results in a mini-conference.
Each group will have an individual supervisor, who will meet with the group at least once in a week. The groups should have all results ready at the time of the seminar, but the deadline for the actual report is only a few days after it (21st November). Each report will be given to another group, which will review and comment it. Finally, the course staff will evaluate the reviews.
Below is a list of official deadlines as well as a suggested schedule for the work:
- Tuesday 19.10.: Meeting/excursion at Viikki at 12:00. The address is Viikinkaari 4. The building is locked, so don't be late!
- Week 43: Experiments planned
- Week 45: Most of the results ready
- Week 46: Preparation of presentation
- 8.11.: Submit the title of the presentation to Arto
- 15-16.11.: Seminar
- 21.11.: Deadline for the reports
- 28.11.: Deadline for the reviews
The seminar presentation
Prepare a presentation of the project work. The length of the presentation is 60 minutes, and after the presentation we have 30 minutes reserved for discussion. The timetable for the seminar will appear later, after we have received the titles of the presentations.
There is a computer and a data projector available in the seminar room, so you can use computer slides for the presentation. If possible, check in advance that the computer (in Room CK107) has necessary software and that the presentation works well.
The seminar report
Each seminar participant will write his or her own report. If the work was done in groups, there will thus be more than one report of the same work. For that reason the group members should decide the viewpoints of each individual report. For example, one member could write more about the biological aspects while another would explain the methodology in detail. All reports should still be self-contained so that each report can be understood without reading the others.
The reports should be formatted according to the ACM Proceedings style, and should be at most four pages long. Note that the style has two columns, and the maximum length is strict. You may use the tighter style.
The report should contain all that is included in a standard scientific article. That includes (at least) abstract, list of references, motivation, a good description of what has been done, the results, and some kind of conclusion.
