The cognitive style of PowerPoint Mika Raento PowerPoint is ubiquitous. It is used in businesses, the military and in academia. Edvard Tufte, _the_ guru of presentation of quantitative data, claims that PowerPoint makes it impossible to present complex ideas or data due to its sales-pitch style, low resolution of computer screens, unnecessary hierarchies and bullet points. He goes as far as to blame the Columbia shuttle accident on PowerPoint presentations of the debris impact analysis and to compare the style of powerpoint to the style of totalitarian newspapers. We shall discuss his reasoning and how it relates to academic presentations.
