to Computing, Introduction to Programming
Aims:
The course is an introduction to computer architecture and
organisation. Two main subjects that are covered are the
function of processor and the fundamentals of operating
system function and implementation.
Texts:
The Finnish version of this course is mainly based on text
- Häkkinen A.: Tietokoneen toiminta. HY/TKTL.
Foreign students have the options
- to follow the finnish course,
to attend the Finnish or English (if enough foreign students) exercise
groups (max 8 points)
and to take part in the exam right after the course (max 52 points), or
- to take part in a final exam based on the following material:
- Aho, Ullman, Foundations of Computer Science, Chapter 4, Data
Models for the Computer, Computer Science Press 1992.
- Tanenbaum, Modern Operating Systems, Prentice Hall 1998, Chapters
and sections 1, 2.1, 2.2.1, 2.2.2, 2.2.5, 2.4, 3.1, 3.3, 3.6, 4.1, 4.2,
4.3.1, 4.3.2, 4.4.1, 4.4.4, 5.1, 5.2.
We also have a news group namedhy.opiskelu.tktl.tito for
discussion. You are encouraged to write your question and

Lectures and small group sessions:
The course has 36 hours of lectures (4 hours per week) and 7 or 8
small group sessions (once a week). Lectures and small group
sessions are kept in Finnish, but an English session can be
organized, if there are enough foreign students.
To pass:
To pass this course you have to gather at least 30 points either
- by doing actively work in small group sessions (max 8 points) and
passing the test right after the course (max 52 points)
- or by passing the final examination (max 60 points)
