Position in Curriculum
Graduate course in Computer Science. Obligatory for students of the
distributed systems and telecommunication specialisation area. Also
required from students of Data Communications Software specialisation area.
Cource goal
The objectives of this course is to understand
- Operating system services for applications, functionality of
operating systems from the viewpoint of
applications and
- operating system basic
structure and implementation principles from the operating systems
programmer, I.e., systems programmer viewpoint.
Course Prerequisites
The course in based on the bachelor level studies of Computer Science,
at least the courses
581305-6 Computer Organisation I, 581332-8 Concurrent Programming
ja 582202 Datacommunication Basics.
Methods for Achieving Credit
First time, Fall 2006, the course must be taken as conventional lecture
course. After that the course can be alternatively done by passing the
separate exam.

Book: W. Stallings: Operating Systems.
Prentice Hall, 2005, 5th ed. The course covers the the whole book.
Other possible and useful material can be found from most of the books
with title "Operating Systems".
