Annual report 2007

The Hecse graduate school

The Helsinki Graduate School in Computer Science and Engineering is a post-graduate programme jointly offered by Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Helsinki . Year 2007 was the 13 th year that this school has been in operation, and the first year of funding period 2007-2013.

There were 47 post-graduates in the school, 20 of which had funding. In addition to positions with funding, Hecse offers these post-graduates other benefits, such as advanced courses, funding for participation in summer schools and conferences, research visits, and annual student meetings. In 2007, Hecse arranged the week-long Summer School on Algorithmic Data Analysis (SADA07), which was attended by 83 post-graduates from around the world.

During the new period that started in 2007, the operations and focal areas of the school will change slightly. The new focal areas are Algorithms, structures and complexity (algorithm design and mathematical methods, basic research and innovative methods for novel applications), Pattern Analysis and Intelligent Systems (methods for finding meaningful patterns from and modelling of large data sets, intelligent interfaces) and System Software (operating systems, database systems, middleware, and compilers).
