General

Linkage mapping is a very powerful genomic tool that enables very
comprehensive validation and refinement of de novo genome assemblies,
especially on data generated on high-throughput sequencing (up to
>1,000,000 variants on >1,000 individuals). Moreover, family-based linkage
and association studies, quantitative trait locus mapping, analysis of
genome synteny and other genomic data analyses require and benefit from
dense and accurate maps.

The focus of the seminar is computational aspects of linkage mapping and
similar analysis like QTL (quantitative trait locus) mapping. Depending on
the interest of the participants, also the methods utilizing
high-throughput sequencing could be covered, e.g. genome assembly,
variation detection, IBD (identical by descent) and haplotype
interference.

Completing the course

Participants must have completed the course Scientific writing or have equivalent skills.

Students are expected to actively participate in the seminar work:
studying scientific sources, writing reports and giving presentations,
reading the reports of other participants and evaluating them, and
actively following presentations.

The detailed schedule of the seminar will be fixed in the first session.
Each student will have three roles in the seminar: (1) a writer and
speaker, (2) reviewer of two other reports, (3) audience for the rest of
the reports and oral presentations.

The grading will be based on each student's own written work, oral
presentation, and commentary on the reports of others as well as
activeness in general. Active attendance of seminar meetings is
obligatory.
