The e-desktop, the new intranet of UH

The development of e-desktops is underway – what would you like?

The development of the e-desktop for the university is at the
implementation stage.

This week, the steering committee for the Ystävä project passed the
implementation schedule for the university's new intranet, which will
replace Alma in stages.

Several e-desktops will be developed, and among them, the desktop for
students will be the first to be designed and implemented. It will be the
prototype for the desktops of other user groups. The implementation
schedule for the desktops is as follows:
1. undergraduates
2. researchers
3. post-graduates
4. support and administrative staff
5. teachers
6. supervisors
7. alumni

The stages are based on a prioritising matrix that was used to estimate
such things as the contents and extent of services offered to the user
groups, and how committed the content producers are.

Some other important implementations at the first stage include work
groups, personal pages, publishing news through many channels, and search
functions.

At the moment, we are gathering feedback on what the users would like the
workgroup feature to include. Do you want real-time information on updates
to the workgroups, for example, or better document management, or new
channels for messaging? The questionnaire is only in Finnish, but the URL
is https://elomake.helsinki.fi/lomakkeet/19477/lomake.html

The intranet pages of faculties and departments will also be moved into the
new system, at the end of the year. Since UH is so large, this will also be
implemented as pilot projects. You can register as a pilot later this
spring, date to be announced.

The e-desktop will be the new intranet of the students and staff; a
centralised tool for communication, interaction and errands. The e-desktop
will adapt to the user's needs; you have a say in what contents or services
your desktop includes.

Ystävä ('friend') is the working title of the new intranet. We will have
a competition to find the final name for our 'friend' in February.
