The department participates in three centres of excellence!

The Department of Computer Science now participates in three centres of excellence. For some time now, the department has hosted Algodan, the Algorithmic Data Analysis centre of excellence that is headed by Esko Ukkonen. Now the Finnish Academy has selected 15 new centres of excellence for the period 2012-2017. The department participates in two of them.

  • The Finnish Centre of Excellence in Computational Inference Research (COIN) is a unit headed by Erkki Oja (Aalto). Petri Myllymäki and his team from the Department of Computer Science are a part of this unit.
  • The Finnish Centre of Excellence in Cancer Genetics Research is headed by Lauri Aaltonen (UH; Faculty of Medicine), and Veli mäkinen with his team from the Department of Computer Science is a member of that unit.

In addition, Aapo Hyvärinen and his team are a part of the Inversion centre of excellence, but as Aapo divides his time between our department and the Mathematics and Statistics department, this membership can be chalked up to the maths side of Aapo.

Congratulations to the new centres of excellence!

(Note from editor: wondering if three and a half memberships in centres of excellence is a Finnish record?)
