Distributed systems and data communications

The teaching and research in the distributed systems and data communications sub-programme studies how information-processing systems are constructed from autonomous parts. The focus lies on the communication and interaction between these parts. The sub-programme has two teaching focuses; the basics of the area and select advanced in-depth features. The basics of distributed systems and data communications include computer organization, operating systems, the basics of distributed computing, Internet protocols, middleware, information security and the formal methods for verification and specification. The optional courses of the sub-programme are based on the latest research in the NODES research group, including mobile computing, the cooperation of autonomous systems, and user interfaces for PDAs and similar devices.

Graduates from this specialisation area are familiar with the operational principles of computer equipment, and on the basis of this knowledge, they can evaluate the suitability of different system and data communications solutions for different purposes. In addition, they know the verification and specification methods needed to ensure the proper functioning of the systems, and are able to evaluate the performance of them. If there are no suitable systems available, they have learned to specify and implement the functions needed.

Supported by the long-term research carried out in the NODES group, the sub-programme offers in-depth education in new data communication technology and mobile computing in the form of specialised courses and seminars. There is also specialised teaching in other important sub-areas, such as operating systems, middleware, performance analysis, information security, and verification methods.

To meet the needs of foreign undergraduates and graduates, most basic courses are supplemented with exercise groups given in English. The specialised courses of the sub-programme, especially in the field of mobile computing, are mainly taught in English.
