MY Camp 2011 science camp in progress

Millennium Youth Camp -scientific camp (MYCamp 2011) for young scientists all over the world started with a festive kick-off in Kumpula campus on Monday, June 13. Opening speeches by vice rector of Univ Helsinki Jukka Kola and CEO of Technology Academy Finland (TAF) Ainomaija Haarla encouraged the young campers to fulfill their dreams in science. TAF hands out the bi-annual Millennium Prize for technology -- these youth are thoufh to be "potential future winners". Monday continued in Kumpula; Department of Computer Science was hosting the ICT theme group. Mikko Pervilä presented Green ICT research at the department, including a visit to see the Ukko cluster. Later, the group enjoyed a private guest lecture by Keith Devlin from Stanford University.

On Tuesday, the ICT theme group of MY Camp continued to an excursion to Nokia. Group met several researchers at the Nokia Headquarters in Keilaniemi. The climax of the visit to Nokia was an inspiring meeting with Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop. After the visit in Nokia, the campers returned to their temporary "home" in Kiljava together with Stephen Furber. Furber is one of the last three Millennium Proze laureates, based on his achievements in developing the ARM processor. Furber spends the evening and Wednesday morning with the campers so that these future scientist have ample time to reflect their views with a highly-acclaimed senior scientist.

On Thursday, MY Camp visits Aalto University and TAF hosts an evening gala in Design Factory. Campers have worked on their group projects during the Spring and finalize their project during the few off-hours during their camp week in Finland. Theme groups present their project works in the gala with great pride.
