Supervision and support

Supervision

The doctoral thesis work in the participating units is typically organized in small research groups, in which a post-doctoral or senior researcher has at most two or three PhD students under his/her daily supervision, giving the students the opportunity to directly learn working practices, scientific reporting, etc. from this researcher. These senior researchers are supervised by the professors. Support teams for Hecse students

Support team meetings

Each student is assigned a support team of two persons (typically one professor and one docent or post-doc). The team meets at least twice a year with the student to discuss the progress of the student, and to hear the student's presentation. Students can of course also contact members of their support teams between the annual follow-up meetings for advice and direction. The team members can also possibly be used as pre-examiners of the student's dissertation manuscript.

  • The research plan meeting is held in the beginning of the year. The student reports on his or her progress in the studies according to the plan and also updates his or her plan. Hecse's administration will at the same time gather information for the annual report of Hecse.
  • The poster session is organized in conjunction with an external event (such as the open house event at either one of the participating departments) or the Hecse summer school. Its main theme is the current research of the student. The poster session allows discussion of research with professors, peers, and other audience, and will also be utilized in discussions with the support team of the student. The team will give the student both the necessary encouragement forward, and offer suggestions on future directions and technical details. The student should return a short report on how the meeting with the support team succeeded to the Director of Hecse (hecse-admin [at]cs.helsinki.if), the support team and the supervisor.

If the student (or the support team) cannot attend the poster session, the student should have a meeting with the support team and likewise return a report on how the meeting succeeded to the Director of Hecse (hecse-admin [at]cs.helsinki.if), the support team and the supervisor.

In general, each student is responsible for his or her work and progress. The support team will not write a separate report, if it does not consider it necessary. The support team will give its feedback directly to the student who should take it into account in his or her reports.
